May Goals

April was a whirlwind.  We feel sincerely tired.  We started with a three day home revival meeting with Daja’s dad, then Passover and Easter.  We had a camping trip shortly after.  And then the kids took their yearly standardized state achievement tests.  Kristina’s daughter made the swim team and Daja’s son made brown sash in Kung Fu.  In the middle of all that we got a short bout of colds.  Yet, we shouldered on!  We got our gardens planted and that makes us happy.  We also have made our fermented foods (kefir, kombucha, sourdough and yogurt) a way of life.  They’ve now become part of our regular homemaking routines!  And that feels great!

We doubled our meals for three weeks in April, but for one week we had our cooking vacation!  That was a load of fun!  To just pull wholesome food straight out of the freezer and have dinner take care of itself was lovely!

I confess that I did not get my beans canned this month.  My jars are still standing ready!  Canning is now on the docket for May!

Baby Step Goals for May:

1. Continue doubling meals at least twice a week!  This will replenish our stock!  We will not touch these meals until we again take our cooking vacation or until there is a “life happening” that requires it!  But we will not resort to them just because we fail to plan dinner!  Word?

2. We are going to prepare our homes and yards for summer.  It’s just around the corner you know!  The beach will be calling to us, as will barbecues in the backyard, picnics and evening strolls in the park.  So, we are going to look a bit ahead in May, thinking of what we’d like to do this summer and prepare ourselves accordingly.  Look for some summer fun posts to get you in the mood and give you the motivation to finish strong in the Spring!  As my sister likes to remind me, “Do what you have to do, when you have to do it, so you can do what you want to do, when you want to do it.”  These are little things that will make a big difference later on–such as making our homemade bug repellent, prepping our picnic baskets, making trail mix and more protein crackers for days of hiking and beach combing, etc.

Big Girl Step:

1. May 19th is Food Revolution Day!  We are working on something really special that will bring two spheres of our lives together.  It’s a Farm-To-Table Dinner….for pastors!  We are striving to get the Christian community to engage more fully into the food movement and creation care!  We are having a blast planning a delicious gourmet meal and getting things ready to host the pastors of our community!  In addition we are working on a special report for Christians who wish to address environmental issues in a way that is theologically sound and culturally relevant!  Pray for that, will you?  Thanks!

So, take a deep breath and perhaps an extra shot of espresso in your coffee and let’s get our May started!  There’s a feeling of hopefulness in the air, isn’t there?


  1. I love your heart for bringing the church community together with environmental concerns. Oh how I wish my church was open to this. I’ve tried, oh how I’ve tried. They are not interested. :( I will pray for your upcoming dinner . .. sounds like fun!

    • Thank you for your prayers! And we will pray for your church community, that the Lord would soften their hearts and open them to taking care of His creation.

  2. May is my favorite month of the year. The weather is getting warmer and the promise of summer and all the bounty summer brings is in the air. Loved this post and it motivated me to a good look at our summer plans.
