Prayer for the Week March 25 – Nothing Withheld

Passover.  The Israelites stepped from the old into the new.  From unimaginable pain, suffering, and loss into God’s provision.  Why did they do it?  Could they hear the Father whispering, beckoning them into the new?   Could they feel His burning love for them?

Come on let’s go
Grab my hand
We will fly
Don’t be afraid
Don’t be anxious
Or wonder why

Come on let’s go together now
To the open, to the open skies of blue
We’ll go together
We’ll stop at nothing ‘til we do
To the open, to the open skies of blue
You may be broken,
But these wings will carry you.
(Excerpt from “Come On, Let’s Go” by Andrea Marie)

They must have been afraid.  They were leaving behind all they knew for what they hoped would be a better life.  Did the fathers make the decision to go hoping and praying they could give their children better lives than the life of toil and strife they were living?  They must have felt God’s presence with them and His protection surrounding them after all they had seen done to the Egyptians at the hand of God.

Did they trust Him completely to provide?  Did they give themselves completely over to Him or did they hold something back?  Did they put Him in a box of their own expectations of what He was going to do and where He was going to lead them?

Don’t we each do that in our own way?  We have certain expectations of what life should look like.  Perhaps it’s the job we work, the position we serve in at church, the house we live in, or our financial position.  We think we know where God wants us.  We get content in our place and suddenly moving to something new is uncomfortable.  Or perhaps we “agree” to allow God to move us but then we hold something back.  Just a little piece of ourselves because we can’t possibly have heard God correctly.  What He’s asking isn’t in the “original” plan.  We have to save something for when we go back.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”  (Matt 22:37)

God wants all of us, not just the parts we want to give to Him.  Withholding even a little bit from Him keeps us from fully moving into the place He has established for us.  This season of Passover is the perfect time to intentionally leave the old things behind and step into our complete-self in Christ.  He is calling us to move forward from glory to glory.

I love that God expects we will forget, that we will need practice in passing over.  I think that’s why in Exodus God established the Passover as an annual festival. (Ex 12)  He wants us to remember He brought us out of slavery.  He wants us to remember He is a miracle working God.  He wants us to remember His provision in the desert.  He wants us to remember He is a jealous God.  He wants us to remember His presence, because He longs for us to be in it.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God which is your reasonable service.”  (Rom 12:1)

Father,
Long ago you called your people to set out on a journey.  They were nearly crushed by their enslavement, but they heard your voice calling them.  Bidding them to summon the courage to be free.  You were calling them out of the desert and into the Promised Land.

It is time for us to remember and move forward again.  Father, we need faith and courage to grow within us.  We need to trust You and not ourselves.  Give us eyes to see the cloud of Your Presence, leading us into the place You have established for us.  Strengthen us for the journey.

May we withhold nothing from You.

In Jesus’ Name we pray,
Amen

Message from Kristina:  When I sat down to write this post I was at my daughters musical rehearsal.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to concentrate with everything going on in the room so I put on my headphones and turned on my favorite Andrea Marie CD.  I knew I wanted to write about the Passover, but this song leaped into my ears as if on a direct path from Holy Spirit.  It was the perfect inspiration.  If you have time, listen to it.  I pray you will be blessed by hearing it.
