Thanksgiving…… before the pilgrims!

A Thanksgiving thought from Meg, Daja’s daughter:

When You Have A Foodie Mom

OK, I  know what you are thinking :the pilgrims at Plymouth were the first to have a day set aside for giving thanks, but my mom found some links with some in formation that was new to me. The real first Thanksgiving was a Mass.

The first thanksgiving was about 55 years before the pilgrims, when the Spanish founder of St. Augustine, Florida, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, and 800 Spanish settlers, shared in a Mass of Thanksgiving. After the celebration of the Mass, Menendez and his Spanish contingent of explorers had a meal together with Indians who were at the landing site.

Yes, it’s all true, but what about the pilgrims’ Thanksgiving? Are all the books about the “first” Thanksgiving lies and you should not read them? No, you can still read them because they’re true. It was the pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving.

But don’t feel like you have to pick a favorite, because these two came from two different backgrounds: one is Spanish and one is English; One was Catholic and one was Puritan.

When you need a day of thanks, it can be a day you need or many days! You know what?  There are probably more days set aside for giving thanks that we don’t even know about!  So this Thanksgiving give thanks for so many days to give thanks!

Wonderful idea. =) I like to think that Thanksgiving Day is something created by God. He gives us many days of thanks in the Bible. Since we don’t all celebrate the Old Testament holidays (God must love holidays, there are so many in the Bible!), we now have a day of Thanksgiving in America set aside just to remember His great gifts and goodness to us. =)
Many blessings to you and your family this Thanksgiving!
