We love family bike rides! Jordan and I have been cycling since before I got pregnant with our first daughter — a long time ago — and we have longed for the day when our girls could really join us. Two summers ago our youngest daughter graduated to her first road bike (it was still too big for her even though it was mini!) and since then we have had some great rides. We’ve cycled from the outskirts of Denver into downtown, from Frisco to Breckenridge, around the foothills of Mt. Ventoux, and one epic ride through Burgundy; not to mention local beach and Angeles National Forest trails. It has been such a joy watching the girls learn to love cycling as much as Jordan and me, so we’ve set a goal. This August we are going to do our first organized ride as a family, the Central Coast Classique. It’s 64 miles long. We need to train. A lot.
This past Saturday we tried a new-to-us trail, the Ventura River Trail from Ventura to Ojai. We had a blast! The weather was perfect, not too hot and cool shade with lots of trees lining the trail. It was a 32-mile round trip out-and-back on what was previously the Ventura to Ojai Railroad. These old rails-to-trails are really great because the average climb is never more than one to two percent. The best part of this trail is the out is the uphill and the back is all down hill. Of course we stopped for an amazing lunch at Ojai Beverage Company, a great little restaurant serving up locally sourced organic and free-range eats, not to mention some ice cold beer. The trip made for a great family day!
