Excuse me, but your California is showing

I am daily faced with the fact that I was born and raised in California. It’s in my blood. I love Maine. I love the people. I love the weather. I love the atmosphere. But, guess what? You can take the girl out of California…..

It’s 86 degrees. All your friends are dying of heat exhaustion. And you’re like, “Mmmmm, isn’t this a delicious day?! Perfect weather! But, I’ll bring along a sweater just in case it dips below 76.”

A friend said, “I buy all my clothes at the thrift store. They have the best stuff!” I asked, “Even your chonies?”  She said, “I have no idea what chonies are.”

My three year old rushed into the kitchen, apparently starving and begging for a snack 10 minutes before dinner. I said, “Chill out, homie!” My friend couldn’t stop laughing. “Did you just call him homie????”

We went out to lunch.  The menu said “Fish Tacos.” I went against my instincts and went out on a limb. I don’t know what it was. But it wasn’t a fish taco.

Maine meets Mexico with this dish. Two soft tacos stuffed with fresh panko crusted haddock, shredded lettuce and Monterey jack cheese, served with sides of spicy cucumber slaw and our own salsa fresca. (From the menu)

Well, in spite of it all, this is a beautiful place to live. We are enjoying our garden, our goats, our raspberry bushes, the beautiful summer rains.  Some of you, sweet readers and friends, have asked for pictures of the adventure. So, here you go. Enjoy!  (For more pictures and videos of the new farm life, follow us on Instagram!)

Dinner outside as often as possible, on our table made from two old doors.

Just, you know, playing the fiddle around the campfire at night. ‘Cause I guess we do that now.

Most of the berries are going into the freezer for jam. But these babies were begging to be a pie. And I’m such a sucker for raspberries who beg.

Old farm equipment is the best!

Nothin’ quite like a little morning plowing to get the baby in a great mood!

  1. What a great honest post. I know what it’s like to move from one state to another. We love living in Florida but there quite a few things I really miss about living in MD. Though snow is not one of them.
It’s nice to have memories like that and hopefully you can bring a little California to Maine 🙂

  2. This was funny! I am also a native Californian, and I am *super* picky about my fish tacos.

    • I know. People these day, right? Just throwing any ol’ combo of fish and veggies in a tortilla and calling it a fish taco! The nerve!!! 🙂

  3. That’s funny. I live in Oregon and I can almost always spot the native Californians (the ones from So Cal are always cold!)

    • We do sort of stand out like a sore thumb anywhere above the grapevine. LOL

  4. Haha! I really relate to this! When I moved to the Midwest a few years ago everyone thought I spoke too fast. They also thought I was too tan and my hair was blonde at the time. That’s how we San Diegans roll! Needless to say I’m back in CA 🙂

    • Well, I am going to stick it out here in Maine. But, there are worse things than being too tan or too blonde! 🙂

  5. I too am a California girl! I may end up splitting time between Utah and California once my husband retires but will always have California in my blood!

    • There are some really lovely spots in Utah. Just don’t order a fish taco!

Thank you for posting pics!!  So fun. Your Meg looks lovely as ever sporting that short cut 😉  Bella and I finished the series of Anne earlier this summer and Meg working the farm in a dress is perfect for her!
God bless The Provision Room and all who visit.

    • You’re welcome! Meg really does look cute with short hair! I like it a lot more than I thought I would! Give Bella a hug for me!!!
