Meet Daja

Kristina and I have been friends for about four years.  As Anne said of Diana, she’s a kindred spirit.

It’s truly a treasure when you meet someone who shares your passions.  In my case–my children, my home, and cheese.  We both love cheese.  Oh, and bread.  Homemade bread with amazing crust.  And chocolate.  Good chocolate, don’t try to buy us off with a Hershey bar.  We want the real stuff.  And while you’re out, pick out a nice bottle of wine to go with the bread and cheese.  Thanks, honey.

Together Kristina and I have spent some epic time in the kitchen together–cooking for friends, for family, for ourselves.  For parties and celebrations and friends who are sick and moms with new babies.  She’s the kind of friend you can call up and say, “Do you have any panko I can borrow?”  or “What would you substitute for Madeira?  I’m all out.”

That’s not to say that either of us are food snobs.  No m’am.  We just like to eat.

And we love our families.  Caring for them well is a priority.  Preparing food for them is an act of love and grace every single day.  Sure, sometimes that’s in the form of oatmeal.   Grace just might sometimes be spelled C.H.I.A. S.E.E.D.S.

Almost two months ago there was a huge wind storm where we live in Southern California.  It knocked out our power for four days.  Thankfully, our husbands are the prepared nerdy sort, so we had generators to keep the freezers frozen–but not quite enough generator to keep the house lit up (nor to do the laundry–but this blog is not called The Laundry Room.  I am not THAT nervy.).  I cooked our meals outside on the grill–in the December wind and drizzle.  My family sat around in the evenings in the dark and I read to them by candlelight until I was tired and sent them to bed at 7pm.  The power eventually came back on and life resumed its normal rhythm.  We were prepared–to a point.  We didn’t starve, nor rush out to buy supplies.  However, those four days in the dark showed us that we could really do more to be ready.  Ready not only for the major disaster everyone has been predicting for years (the earthquake or zombie apocalypse), but also for the month when the money isn’t rolling in, a family emergency like an illness or accident or to be a blessing to our friends and neighbors when disaster strikes.  Rather than scrambling and frantically putting stuff together, how great it would be to to have ready offerings.  These offerings, made with love and compassion and foresight.

 

So, Kristina and I started talking about these things after the lights had come back on.  Overs cups of tea we talked about what we could do to be more ready.  Little-by-little the idea for this blog was born.

Would it be possible to feed my family of nine while building up my provisions without breaking the bank?  That, my friend, is what I want to know.

So, that’s why I’m here.  At my computer.  In the basement.  At almost 11pm.  Blogging about food storage and preparedness.  Without putting too fine a point on it, I just love my family and friends and want to be ready.
