Have you ever just gotten tired of trying to follow what other people are doing?

Well that’s where I found myself recently.  As a Christian mom of two I really feel like God calls us to be prepared for life’s unexpected happenings.  Proverbs 21:20 says, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” (NIV) Then there’s 1 Timothy 5:8, “Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (NIV) Ouch!  Sometimes conviction smarts!

I have mainly found two schools of thought for being prepared.  First you have to either be prepared for armageddon or you suddenly become the Queen of Coupons and start purchasing only highly processed shelf stable foods.  (I’m trying to be subtle here but you know what I mean.  All the chemical laden, genetically modified, full of corn, soy and high fructose corn syrup foods wrapped up in pretty packages that sometimes say “All Natural.”)  Neither one of these are going to fly in my family.  Where does that leave me?

I think back to my grandma’s kitchen.  She had a few places she stored food; in the kitchen cabinet, in a stairwell leading up to the attic (just off the kitchen) and the root cellar accessed by a trap door in the kitchen floor.  The food stored there were things like, flour, sugar, lard, jars and jars of put up fruits and vegetables, root vegetables and onions.  She was prepared to provide food for her family.  It wasn’t fancy, but I remember it tasting really good.  She had put a lot of love into that food and I could taste it every time I ate at Grandma’s table.

So here’s what I think.  I really do believe I can be prepared for emergencies, an illness, a friend or neighbor in need, just about anything if I pretend to be the slow plodding turtle and take little steps to getting it done.  I don’t have to sacrifice my values in what I feed my family just so I can have food on a shelf.  This is probably going to take a lot of work on my part.  But I’m up for the challenge and when I’m done I will have a “provision room” full of goodness!


  1. I miss my mother-in-law’s bread-and-butter pickles and her hand-picked, shelled pecans. You will love having food in your provision room, especially thinking about the healthy food you are giving your family.
