How to fail at Lent.

Lent is almost upon us. I can’t believe it. It’s still Christmas, right? I mean, seriously. Where did the time go. Anyway, some years I feel incredibly ready for Lent and have all my intentions lined up and ready. And then there are years when I am not. so. prepared. #enoughsaid

Yet, Lent is so beautiful. It is actually one of my favorite times of the year. There is this emphasis on holiness that causes me to face and embrace my imperfections and throw myself at the feet of my loving Jesus. It’s failure done right.

Failure done right is our path to Jesus

Let’s face it: we all gonna fail. May as well get some benefit from it. Read More

Banish Boredom This Winter!

Banish boredom this winter!

Although we didn’t get a white Christmas, winter finally arrived in Maine. It’s beautiful and I love it. Outside looks all magical and wonderlandish. Inside there is a toasty fire, copious amounts of tea, and baked goods galore.  It’s not without its challenges, though. My big boys are learning the joys of shoveling the driveway and getting outside in the negative temps to tend to the farm animals. My husband is working on the outside of the house wearing about 101 layers of clothing. And I am trying to figure out how to entertain the Littles when it is too cold to send them outside all day.  Of course they want to watch TV and we do let them. But, we don’t want to make a crazy habit out of it. Although it may be too late for that. As evidenced by my two year old saying, “Mom, can I watch Wild Kratts all day long? Dad said yes.” Dad most assuredly did not say yes. #honestpostpartum

Of course, every day there are books to read, pages to color, legos and blocks, etc. But sometimes Mom has got to get a little creative. Winter is long and we’ve just gotten started.

So, when the cabin fever sets in here are some fun ideas: Read More

Premature Rupture of Membranes: Complication or Variation of Normal?

I was 37 weeks along. It was the day after Thanksgiving. I was on a decent Netflix binge, laying there in bed, totally vegging out. Out of nowhere: POP! Trickle. GUSH! My water broke.  This wouldn’t have necessarily been a cause for concern, except that I had recently moved to rural Maine and my midwife and mother were to fly in from the West Coast for the birth. This turn of events was four days too early.

Contractions started mildly, more like Braxton-Hicks. Nevertheless, we got ready to catch this baby on our own.  Night turned to morning.  Morning turned to night. Night turned to morning.  Contractions would come-and-go. Sometimes strong. Sometimes so mild I could sleep through them.  This wasn’t what anyone would call “active labor.”

My mother and my midwife arrived and I was still  pregnant.  To make a long story short, our baby made his grand entrance 6 days after my water broke.

This Is Marriage

Remember when Gene Kelly was singing and dancing in the rain, so in love?

Or how about a real life example: remember when Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah’s couch because he was so in love and just couldn’t contain himself?

OK, a less annoying example? St. Francis of Assisi, so overcome with Divine Love, he would rush about through the garden, the church, the village, as if drunk, proclaiming God’s love! So in love he was mistaken for drunk!

Does marriage feel like that for you? Let’s be honest–most days, no. Sure, marriage has its fantastic moments, but on regular days…..well, it’s just regular. Read More

Ever have great intentions of having quality time with the Lord? You’re gonna read the whole Bible this year or have an hour of prayer time a day.  You’re gonna make it to extra church services or spend time with amazing journaling prompts. And then…..life.  Life that eeeeeeks away at your time. You wake up in the morning, you blink, and then it’s 8pm and you’re putting the kids in bed. The whole day gone.  It was just one big blur of housekeeping, bill-paying, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and settling sibling fights. Oy.

Hold Onto The Good

Blog 3 Comments

I’ll just cut right to the chase. 2015 pretty much kicked my butt. It started out with so much promise, but there was a bumpy road to Canaan Land. In a lot of ways I felt like I pretty much couldn’t catch a break. Right about the time I thought, “OK, I can do this!” something else would happen to knock me off my feet. To deal with everything life threw at me in 2015 I would either have to start a lot of day-time drinking or learn to sit at the feet of Jesus.  Being that I found out in April that I was pregnant, that decision was made for me. Sit at the feet of Jesus. A lot. Even when you can’t feel His presence. Even when you wonder if anyone is listening. Read More

Those who wait

Blog 1 Comment

On November 27 I was calming laying in bed, with my big pregnant belly, on a Netflix binge. It was relaxing and chill. Suddenly everything changed. I felt a pop and then a drizzle that turned into a gush. My water broke.

Soon contractions started coming. My husband and daughter tidied up the room and arranged the birth supplies.

And then we waited…..

Night turned to morning.

Winter Cocktails for Advent – A Slow Down Approach to the Holidays (Cocktail #4 – Amaretto Eggnog)

Amaretto Eggnog

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without eggnog!  It’s true.  The only time eggnog comes around is during the Advent season, so drink up my friends!

If you are a purist then by all means make your own eggnog!  (Here is a great recipe by Alton Brown over at Food Network.  You’ll probably want to leave out the bourbon suggested in the recipe.  Or not.  Go big or go home!)  If you don’t have the time or inclination to make your own, then a good store bought version will be fine.

For the cocktail:

1 oz amaretto
1 oz vodka
2 oz eggnog
ground cinnamon or nutmeg for garnish

Shake amaretto, vodka, and eggnog together in a cocktail shaker over ice.  Pour into a glass and enjoy!

For the mocktail, simply leave out the alcohol and garnish each glass with cinnamon or nutmeg.

Snuggle up in front of a fire and enjoy!

Cocktail #1: Rosemary Moscow Mule

Cocktail #2 Old Vermont

Cocktail #3 Grown-up Hot Chocolate
