December Goals

It’s that most wonderful time of the year.  Parties for hosting; marshmallows for toasting; and all that.  You know.  In a time of year when our focus should all the more be on joy and family and heavenly things, pondering the great mysteries and treasuring up things in our hearts, we are often distracted and harried and hurried.  So, this month our goals are less about outward preparedness and more about inward preparedness.  Meaning, preparing our hearts for His coming. Kristina’s Classroom Redo

Goals No Comments

As part of our August goals Daja and I set out to clean up our classrooms.  Most of you probably know we each homeschool our children and like the kitchen, the classroom is the heart of our home.  It has to function well.  That doesn’t mean it’s always neat and tidy, ’cause well that would mean we’re not actually living in them, but they have to be well thought out spaces for us to get some serious learning done.  Every once in awhile that means you have to seriously clean it out and start over. August Goals

Goals No Comments

Can you believe its August?  I can’t!  I swear I must have blinked or something for time to have sped by so very quickly!  As many of you already know Daja and her family welcomed their eighth child, Tegshee Walker to the family just about two weeks ago.  Daja and Tegshee are doing great and getting some very lovely lying-in time.

We are nearing the completion of our all veg cookbook.  Woot!  The release date for this new ebook will be August 14th!!  We just know you are going to love it!  Also, we’re going to offer to you our dear readers a very special back to school deal on our homeschool curriculum this month.  So keep an eye out for that!  A little birdie tells me you don’t want to miss this opportunity!

If you are just joining us, each month we set goals for ourselves both little and big to help us prepare for “life’s little happenings.”  Don’t worry if you haven’t started yet, just jump right in where you are and take the first step.  You know it’s always the hardest!

Baby Steps:

  • Double two meals each week.  Eat one and put the second one in the freezer.  (Your first goal in The Provision Room is to store up one month of food.)  If you do nothing else you will have eight meals stored each month.  At eight meals per month it will take you just four months to reach your first goal.  If you follow this simple pattern then every three months you will get to take one week off from major cooking!!!  We call it the Mommy Cooking Vacation!  (If you are wondering how all this works you can read more about it here.)
  • Make an organizational plan for the fall.  What new school items will be needed?  What needs to be replenished in your Herbal Medicine Cabinet before cold and flu season are upon us?  What plants should you be thinking about starting for your fall gardens?

Big Girl Step:

  • In line with our organizational plans Daja and I will be tackling our homeschool classrooms.  Somehow I’ve been blind to how big my girls have gotten.  My twelve year old can hardly fit in her desk and neither of the girls have any real work space.  So we’re going to tackle this monster and share with you our before and after pictures.  Brace yourselves!IMG_0813

July Goals

There is just a lot going on here!

IMG_5922

First and foremost Daja is having a baby!  That means she and her family are slowing down and preparing for their new gift.  Don’t worry though, she has been writing away in preparation for her lying-in time which means even though Daja will be resting, you will still get to read some amazing posts about how she has prepared for the baby, pregnancy nutrition and a lot more!

I will be finishing the work on our All Things Vegetable Cookbook.  Goodness these things always take more time than we expect!  But never fear, I am working on it and our Lying-In ebook.  God willing we’ll have both of those to release no later than the end of August.  (We sure would appreciate your prayers as we work through the last details of both these projects and most of all, for the safe arrival of the new baby!)

I think a new baby and two new books are plenty for our Big Girl Steps this month, but if you are following along and want to join in with some Baby Steps this is what we recommend.

1.  Double two dinner meals each week for the freezer.  This is such a great way to increase your food stores without increasing your budget!

2.  Make sure to keep working with your garden.  In the heat of summer the plants may need extra water or even some shade covering if the sun is too intense.  Also, a good organic fertilizer or fish emulsions watered in will keep the plants producing throughout the season.

Abundant Blessings!

June Goals

“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”  Henry James

This is our first “official” week of summer and I feel like a child on Christmas morning, not sure where to start with all the fun!!  I want to allow myself plenty of time to rest but at the same time I’m very aware of how quickly summer goes!  I don’t want to miss anything!  Not to mention my to-do list for things around the house that just seems a mile long this year!  I remind myself to set some goals and take some baby steps.  Those steps really do add up over time and that’s what we are all about here in the Provision Room.  Just take a look…

After one year!

After one year!

Increasing slowly without breaking the budget!

Increasing slowly without breaking the budget!

I love stepping into my provision closet now!  It’s neat and organized and full of food for any of life’s little happenings.  One of the smartest things I did was give my 10 year old the job of keeping track of everything in the freezers and in the closet.  She is taking her job very seriously and keeping us all in line!  I love it!

So now is the time to join in, right where you are and start preparing your family for rainy days when life takes over.  Don’t be frustrated or overwhelmed let’s just journey together in community and the job will get done!

We are continuing our hospitality theme for this month.  It seems like we really hit on topic close to everyone’s heart so we’ve decided to stay here a little longer.   Daja and I have so much more to share with you!  We really feel like we’ve only scratched the surface!

Baby Steps:

1.  Continue to double two meals per week for the freezer.  If you are new to the Provision Room and don’t know why this is so important, and why we think it is one of the smartest ways to expand your stores without increasing your budget, check out our page on What Makes The Provision Room Unique.

2.  Prepare a car picnic basket.  This is a great way to avoid the drive-through this summer and be prepared for impromptu picnics, date nights, days at the beach, and just any ol’ time the hunger monster lifts its head from the back seat!  How to prepare a car picnic basket.

Big Girl Steps:

1.  Take the 30 Day Fast Food Challenge!!  Last year we kicked off our 30 Day Fast Food Challenge.  If you haven’t yet tried giving up fast food here is your chance!  For 30 days commit to eating intentionally, promising not to hit a single drive through or fast food joint.  This is a great challenge for your entire family, small group or church!  Trust us, you won’t regret taking this challenge!

2.  Practice hospitality.  This will be different for each of us.  The point is reach out to someone and make them feel welcome.  Need a refresher in the art of Biblical Hospitality?  Check out Entertaining vs. Hospitality.

May Goals

Hospitality.

A word that inspires some and sends chills down the spines of others.  We know.  But, there is Grace.

IMG_7270

For the month of May we are focusing on Biblical Hospitality.  What does it mean?  How is it different than entertaining?  Why we should do it and how we should share hospitality.  We’ll be giving you some of our tried-and-true tips and how-to’s with our prayers that you will find rest and peace in sharing hospitality as an act of mercy.

We also have some great things in store for Mom, including a give-away!  And, don’t forget May 17th is Food Revolution Day.  We’ll be chronicling our participation in this great event supporting local food.  It’s going to be a busy month here in The Provision Room!  Are you ready to join in the fun?

Our Baby Steps:

  • Continue doubling two meals per week for the freezer and pantry.
  • Purchase inexpensive hospitality items.  (Don’t worry!  We have lots of ideas on frugal ways to be ready for guests.)

Big Girl Steps:

  • Practice hospitality, by participating in Food Revolution Day.

More often, there will be visits with family and friends, mundane times of struggling and growing together with conversations centering around God, marriage, the events of our day and our generation, and our hopes and prayers for one another, our children and our children’s children.

You see, memories such as these have very little to do with “entertaining”. There is little recollection of what was served or on what plate. Our preparations are merely a tangible means of expressing, “I want this to be special because you are special! You are precious to God and you matter to me!” In the end, however, it is not the preparations, nor the lack thereof, that we remember. It is the touch of God… not always, but often. Because of an open heart,  an open home, a plateful of something, a candle’s  glow or a quiet word, God somehow chooses to draw us closer to Himself and to one another…
That is biblical hospitality.  (Theresa Bowen, A Candle In The Window Hospitality Network)

April Goals

Goals 1 Comment

We have many new readers in The Provision Room!  So, let’s start by explaining our philosophy: BABY STEPS!
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncFCdCjBqcE?rel=0]

So many blogs about preparedness and homemaking are OVERWHELMING!  At least for us.  There is so much to think about that we are just about paralyzed and do nothing.  So, we take our preparedness in BABY STEPS.  Every month we set small, manageable goals.  There’s no chance for failure with our plan.  The steps to preparedness are so little that they can easily be done in a month.  We can tell you from experience, in the last year we’ve gone from barely prepared for a brief power-outage to prepared with abundant pantries, safes, generators, gardens thriving and so much more.  Everything in BABY STEPS.  And everything WITHIN BUDGET!  (*high fives with our husbands!*)

And we always set one “BIG GIRL” step each month.  One larger project that needs our attention.  We share all these goals with you at the beginning of the month, 1) to keep ourselves accountable and 2) to hopefully inspire you to join us on the road to being READY FOR LIFE’S HAPPENINGS!

APRIL’S BABY STEPS:

1. Take our cooking vacation.  This is the little break we give ourselves every three months and we eat from our stored meals.

2. Continue doubling meals twice a week to stock the freezer.

3. Investigate a local canning kitchen before the Spring and Summer produce is in full swing.

APRIL’S BIG GIRL STEP:

Have our Spring Gardens fully put in!  This is the time of year we amend our soil if needed, put in the seedlings we’ve started indoors, the direct sow seeds and any plants we’ve picked up.  Check out Kristina’s ebook on raised bed gardening here: Three Easy Steps To Raised Beds.  If you are a novice gardener, this is a no-nonsense approach that is so easy, I bet your kids could handle it as a school project on their own!

Here’s a little encouragement, especially for our readers from Vicki West of Homestead Blessings!  You can do it!
