August Meal Plans

Menu Plans 3 Comments

Daja:  It’s August!  I can hardly believe it!  I have been in a sweet-baby-breath-induced haze for the past two weeks.  Where they went I do not know, but if we could bottle my little Tegshee’s breath I think we could achieve world peace.  He is just that delicious.

Anyway, here are my plans for August.  I tried to plan easy stuff to ease myself back into full-time homemaking.  So hopefully this is not too ambitious!  You’ll notice several days of “Meal from friends.”  My mommy friends have been great about bringing over food since I gave birth.  And rather than cut me off cold-turkey, they are weaning me off their beautiful meals throughout the month of August!  So kind.  I am one appreciative mommy!  So, I am getting some breaks throughout the month.

Daja's August Meal Plan

Kristina:  I feel like I’m trying to hold onto summer with the very tips of my fingers!  Summer always goes WAY too quickly!  For our meals this month, I’m still cooking mostly out of doors.  My DH built an arbor over our outdoor kitchen area and I have been loving every moment of being in it!  (I haven’t posted any pictures yet because we still need to paint it.  But I will get that reveal post up soon!)  Also, we are spending lots of evenings with family and friends as we all try to enjoy every last free moment.  I did make sure to include two meals each week that I’m doubling for the freezer or as dinner-kits for the pantry.

July Menu Plans

Menu Plans No Comments

Daja: It’s that time again!  Time for our cooking vacation!  And how timely for my family!  I am in the home stretch of this pregnancy.  And I totally dig the idea of NOT being in the hot kitchen so much!  So, I’m starting immediately.  And probably indefinitely!  Pregnancy and birth, what better LIFE HAPPENING for which to be prepared!

With that in mind, I’m not even going to do major meal planning or shopping this month.  Just week-by-week.  Because when I have this baby, family and friends will make sure I have some meals brought to me for a few weeks.  So, for the first time in about a year-and-a-half, I’m going to totally wing it this month!

July Menu Plans

Kristina:  Yay!!! for Mom’s Cooking Vacation!!!!  We have been busy building a pergola for my outdoor kitchen so not having to cook every night has been such a blessing!  I just have tell Alyssa (my 10 year old who manages our provision list) to go pull something from the freezer.  The girls make a salad and *poof* dinner is on the table and I didn’t have to stop working outside!  Amazing!

The rest of the month I will be doing all my cooking outside with vegetables fresh from the garden and easy meals on the grill.

June Meal Plans

Menu Plans No Comments

Daja: Last month, we had some “life happenings” that derailed our meal plans.  (My grandmother had a stroke and so we rushed out of town to be with her and to help my parents.  Praise the Lord, she is doing much better and is home!)  So, we didn’t get very many meals put away and we ended up eating from the freezer a bit even when we got home because this pregnant lady was just too tired!  C’est la vie.

This month is also interesting because I am not doubling as often as I would most months.  Again, I’m gonna blame it on pregnancy.  🙂  I’m due in July and it’s time to start slowing down, spending more time in quiet reflection, practicing relaxation and staying out of my hot kitchen!  Speaking of my hot kitchen, I have tried to pick most of our meals that can be made outside on the grill or with minimal power usage.  If I can keep my oven off during the hottest parts of the day, I shall be much more agreeable to live with.

A fun thing this month is my daughter’s “coming of age.”  For lack of a better term we are calling it her Bat-Mitzvah, although we are not Jewish.  We will have special times of blessing for her as we welcome her into the adult community, with extra responsibilities and privileges.  Which means I’ll be making a lot of Indian food because she wants to be a missionary to India.  Should be lots of fun!

June Meal Plan

Kristina:  It’s SUMMER!!!!  Praise the Lord!  Don’t get me wrong, we had a great homeschool year but there is just something about the finish.  Just puts me in a good mood, y’all!  My menu this month is happy food.  Lots of outdoor cooking with lots, and lots of vegetables.  We’re even beginning work on a “proper” outdoor kitchen so that I can spend more time outside and less time in.  Sounds good to me!

May Menu Plans

Menu Plans No Comments

Daja: Three special Sundays in a row!  Mother’s Day on the 12th.  The kids are going to cook for me.  And I will try to act surprised.  Even though–with seven of them “helping” I’m sure it will be a bit of a three-ring circus!  Then Pentecost Sunday.  During the Feast of Pentecost, the traditional Jewish foods are dairy dishes such as cheese cakes and blintzes.  I am super looking forward to that!  And then my sweet husband’s 40th birthday.  He wants me to make a Mongolian dish I have never made before.  So, I am practicing it on the 1st.  So, hopefully, I’ll have the kinks worked out by his special day.  It’s Banshtei Tsai, which are tiny meat dumplings swimming in a pot of Mongolian milk tea (which is salty and buttery, not sweet like we usually think of tea).  I think I can pull it off.

As always we are doubling meals and stashing some in the freezer for  “Life’s Happenings.”

And as always, if you want any recipes, let us know!  We are always happy to keep our recipe file updated for you!

Kristina:  I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I am craving Daja’s chicken liver pate!  Seriously!  I never thought I would ever come to like chicken liver in any form.  My mom used to make liver and onions for us when I was a child and it still gives me the chills.  The smell, the texture, bluck!  Thank God for ketchup, it was the only way I survived!!  But now I find myself eating Daja’s pate all the time (now you know who’s been eating it all Daja!)  So I’m going to make it this month.  I’ve also added more fish.  I’m excited to try several new recipes I think my family will really enjoy.May-13 Meal PlanDON’T FORGET!!!!  Food Revolution Day is May 17!  It’s a day to cook real food and share it with others!  And if you do, you can send us a pic and you might win Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Cookbook!  Check out our Food Revolution Day pictures and ideas here: FOOD REVOLUTION DAY!

April Menu Plans

Menu Plans No Comments

Daja: I used to feel that menu planning was not for me.  It was too difficult.  I was too unorganized.  I was too free-spirited.  Our budget didn’t work a month at a time.  I needed more flexibility.  My excuses went on and on and on.

It’s now been over a year since I’ve made monthly meal planning a discipline.  I’m by no means saying everyone HAS TO do it our way.  Every family has to find what works for them.  But, I will say that it has made our lives so much easier!  To be able to look ahead and to have a plan makes a huge difference.  There is no more looking in the refrigerator and saying, “What in the world am I going to cook today?”  And no more running to the store because I want to make lasagna and am halfway through only to realize that I’m out eggs.  No more just throwing something together that lacks in creativity, love, or honor.  (Oh, Momma!  You know the day you ended up giving the whole family PB&J for dinner!  It happens to the best of us!)  With a family my size (in July there will be 10 of us) the more we can get things into a rhythm and the more we can simplifying the daily things, the happier we are all.  Frees us up to do other things.

Here is my meal plan for April.  You’ll notice that the first week is my Cooking Vacation!  This is the time we eat some of the meals we’ve been storing the freezer, so that our stored meals are in constant rotation and nothing gets wasted.  We track these stored meals on an inventory sheet that is on the front of the freezer.  During our cooking vacation we’ll eat the meals that have been stored the longest.  “First in; First out!”  Our little system makes for a nice week-long break every three months.  Gives the budget a break and gives Mom a little break from food prep.

The FREE DAYS on the menu are days that my kids will be at their grandparents house.  So, I’ve left those days free of a set plan, because I’ll probably cook up a little something special for my husband.  😉

Kristina:  I am so excited for my Cooking Vacation!  I am really looking forward to the break from the kitchen and the break for my budget!  The meals for March were extra expensive because of Passover and Easter so the extra savings is quite welcome!

For this month I feel like we are going on an International journey with our food.  For whatever reason my interests/cravings take us everywhere!  Mexico, France, India, Greece, and Italy are all on the menu.  To make it extra exciting for us all I’ll try to find music for each of the culinary adventures we take this month.  I can hear the laughter around my table already!

March Meal Plans

Menu Plans No Comments

KRISTINA: I can hardly believe we have been on this journey for one whole year!  Practice makes perfect and planning these menus seems to be easier.  Somehow it doesn’t take as long as it did a year ago.  It also helps that we can go back and look and what we were eating last year at this time and get some handy ideas for what to eat now!

I’m doing something a bit unusual for our menu.  I’m not planning anything specific for the first week of the month.  This isn’t my Mommy Cooking Vacation, it’s just some flexibility I want to build in for our spring break.  I want the girls to be able to choose fun meals and I know we’ll be out of the house more as we picnic, drive around, and probably do some skiing.  (I know, spring break and skiing???)  Things I have in mind for that week include; spelt and white bean salad, chicken salad pitas, Southwestern chicken and pasta, cheese & crackers, and an array of sandwiches.  Keeping meal ideas in mind will keep us from eating out and will help us stick to our budget.

The remaining weeks will be as usual where I will be doubling up on several meals for the freezer.

Here you go…

Mar-13 Meal Plan

DAJA:

So many special days this month!  Some feast days and some fasting days: St. Patrick’s Day, St. Joseph’s Feast Day, First Day of Spring (my mother always makes the same delicious Spring-Time Soup and a “Daffodil Cake.”  When I make it, it always tastes like Home.), Passover, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter!  Plus we have a birthday and anniversary thrown in there!  The menu practically wrote itself!  🙂

I have never been much good at menu planning–or any sort of planning for that matter.  It may appear that I am all organized, but in reality, my organization is more like herding cats.  BUT, it has now been a full year of being intentional about our meal plans, bulk ordering food, stocking the pantry and keeping inventories.  Truth be told, I was doubtful that I would be able to be faithful at it this long!  You know what has helped tremendously?  ACCOUNTABILITY!  The fact that Kristina and I keep each other on track with our goals makes all the difference.  If you’d like to see a little more organization and goal setting happening in your home, I’d really encourage you to find a friend on the same healthy journey and link-up!

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.  Proverbs 27:17

Without further ado, here is my menu plan for March.  As always if you’d like any specific recipes from either of us, just ask!

February Menu Plans

Daja: That second full week of this month is Ka-Razy!  Monday is Mongolian New Year, so I’ll be making like a gazillion dumplings (think I’m joking?  My mother-in-law makes about 2,000 dumplings for the New Year.  I know this.  She counts.), cake, salad, etc.  Then Fat Tuesday, because we don’t get fat enough on Monday.  Then it’s Ash Wednesday, which, thank the Lord, is not another feast day.  I don’t know if my pregnant digestion could handle another food marathon.  So, it’s a broth and bread sort of day, without meat, and denying ourselves.  Just in time for the sugar overload to come on Valentine’s Day.  The trick for Valentine’s Day is to cook something that my husband and I both agree is a treat and romantic.  We really do not have the same palate at all.  But, we recently went to a restaurant that had the best pork rillettes.  So, I am going to try to recreate that.  Should be a treat for both of us! Happy New Year!

Daja and I decided for this year we would combine our two monthly menu posts.  You’ll get the same menus we’ve been giving you in a single post instead of two.  We decided to do this for a couple of reasons.  1) Because we will post the menus together, the post will hopefully be more timely.  (Less of our excuses as to why we are late telling you our plans.)  2) It will cut back on the number of posts you get from us at the beginning of the month.  Let us know how you like this new system.
