If you follow this blog, you know that I (Daja) have moved from Southern California to Maine.  We have a little farm we call Kylo. It’s a slow-and-steady-wins-the-race kind of thing.  We got a huge garden in this year and are gradually adding our animals. What blows me away is how wonderful the soil is here. I’ve been gardening in California for years and it is definitely an uphill battle–what with the water issues, intense heat, clay-like soil.  But here, it has been much easier and much more delightful to garden. Stuff actually grows here without so many tears.  The downside is that in Southern California I gardened year around. Here, you have 90-120 days. So, you better be movin’!

Today I sat down at my computer and my ten year old son walked by and said, “Whatcha doing?”  I replied, “Ordering a few things online.” He said, “Let me guess. Canning supplies.” #dontjudgeme Read More

Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of Summer!  And the weather around here, at least, certainly confirms that!  To get your Summer started off right, here are some of our best posts for your Summer enjoyment!

1. Need some creative, affordable and fun ideas for the family this summer?  Try our To-Do List from last summer!  This Summer our To-Do list is much shorter.  In fact, Daja’s list only has one thing: Have a baby.

2. Summer is the perfect time to amp up your hospitality!  Sharing food, fun, and memories with guests in the backyard, at the beach, at the park, or camping.  Outdoor “entertaining” is the way to go!

3. If all that outdoor hospitality has you turned into a buffet for mosquitoes, consider whipping up some of our easy, safe, and effective NATURAL BUG REPELLENT!  There are tips there, too, on treating the bites if you already have them!

4. Traveling a bit or a lot this Summer?  We dare you to make it a Fast Food Free Summer!  We have a PDF that you can download, print, and share with others!  Also, check out these TIPS FOR AVOIDING THE FAST FOOD TRAP!  It can be done and it’s easier than you think!  Last year we took a long road trip from Los Angeles to San Antonio, Texas and didn’t resort to fast food even once!

5. We live Summer by a simple motto: Never left a good picnic go un-picnicked.  We are firm believers in the power of a picnic.  To help you, we have two links: Prepared For A Picnic and Your Car Picnic Basket.  A picnic is one of the happiest of everyday “Life Happenings”!

Have a beautiful, memorable, fun, blessed, and cool summer!

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

July was a month of big accomplishments.  Mainly our big road trip to The Reformation of Food and The Family Conference.  There were three of us driving (Kristina, my mom, and me) and it took us 25 hours one way.  We rotated drivers every few hours and didn’t stop except to fuel up and eat!  And we made the whole trip Fast Food Free!  Seven people, one week, 1350 miles, no fast food.  Woot! On Tuesday we embarked on a road trip from Los Angeles to San Antonio in order to attend The Reformation of Food and Family conference!  By “we” I mean, Kristina and her two daughters, my mom, my oldest daughter, my youngest son and me!

We purposed to make the entire journey Fast Food Free!  But, I gotta tell ya, there is not much out there once you pass Tucson.  If we hadn’t planned ahead a bit, we’d be in a real pickle.   Read More

Kristina’s July Menu Plan

Menu Plans No Comments

I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July!  I actually felt like we celebrated the holiday this year.  At breakfast we read the Declaration of Independence to the girls and talked about the events surrounding the Declaration.  Of course we just had to grill up some burgers in the afternoon.  Then we were off to watch our community fireworks.  At the fireworks we all stood and said the Pledge of Allegiance  and listened to the Star Spangled Banner being sung by a local fourth grader.  It was wonderfully patriotic, just like the 4th should be! Love being outside.  Hate the bugs!

Nothing ruins a good picnic or camping trip like being a buffet for mosquitoes or gnats!  And then there the paranoia of ticks to ruin a hiking trip!
